Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated remarkable composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of play.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the win, echoing his sole prior tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.
Final Round Drama
Rai started the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under final round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.
Fleetwood edged a stroke clear with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final hole.
Playoff Climax
This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5m (£1.13m) in winnings.

The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Hillier.
