A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen others got wounded in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a country home in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The detonation was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the residence near the Verona region to execute an removal notice for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

The three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were arrested at the scene and another man who fled following the blast was apprehended not long after. All three have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area revealed the building reduced to a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The head of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the residence was under an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the three owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents caused the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander the police commander told the media.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the detonation immediately struck our personnel,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the site, the interior minister said.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the incident consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the blast had occurred on a floor above the access point and told the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he revealed members had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being opened”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told Italian media, adding that the three had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the three men who had been killed in the line of duty.
