Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

Leadership Change
Summers stated he would retreat from public positions after Congressional panel disclosed his repeated messages with Epstein

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became publicly available.

The economist remarked in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their progress".

The prominent academic, who formerly led the prestigious university, declared on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The newly public messages showed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted the economist's determination to step down.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he brought to the governing body," the organization commented.

Congressional Action

This development follows after the entire Congress of Congress decided on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to release its records on Epstein.

The measure will afterward move to the desk of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has stated he plans to endorse the legislation, after modifying his view on the matter following objections from his supporters.

Email Contents

A batch of Epstein-related messages released by the House Oversight Committee last week referenced multiple prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without implying any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The emails revealed that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often attempting to connect the academic to influential world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the emails were shared with the general audience, Summers stated he took "total ownership for my misguided choice to persist in interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he desired "to reestablish confidence and fix bonds with the persons closest to me".

Previous Positions

The professor occupied senior posts under party leaders; acting as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He headed the institution from 2001 to 2006 and is still a faculty member there. When announcing his departure from public roles earlier on this week, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Other Impacts

Following the economist's statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, verified that he was ceased to be associated with the organization.

He entered the directorate of the AI company, which develops ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
