Keith Baker along with Keith Baker Are Instructing Classes at DMU

Since 2018, a specialized event organizer has been running immersive events where experienced game masters lead Dungeons & Dragons games in old manors in England and at an American castle venue. The full-service getaways are especially popular among career game masters who infrequently find the chance to participate as players themselves, and they often seek advice from seasoned professionals on topics ranging from spontaneous storytelling and puzzle design to dealing with tough scenarios at the table.

In response, the planners began designing a structured way to answer these inquiries, which led to the establishment of DMU. The debut workshop is set for early January 2026 at a university in Atlanta.

“You can watch thousands of YouTube videos on any topic and gain significant knowledge, but the philosophy was that there’s just no substitute an in-person experience together with other dungeon masters, where real-time interaction with expert teachers and your peers who are probably in comparable situations and aim to improve their skills,” stated the program's dean.

Available Classes and Ticket Packages

Game masters can select packages ranging from $995 to two thousand five hundred dollars, according to the level of access they desire with the experts. The entry-level option includes selection from four classes:

  • Skill Building: Covers the basics of running D&D.
  • Story Arc Development: Focuses around building persistent adventures.
  • Setting Creation: Highlights the development of worlds.
  • Industry Advancement: Tailored to DMs who seek to understand more about the tabletop profession.

Every class includes multiple sessions of training split over 48 hours.

“The courses are created so that you depart having usable skills, probably greater confidence, and many practical techniques,” Carl noted. “They’re not just lectures and they’re not just static videos. These are sessions that you can attend, gain knowledge from, and then head back to your table the following week and put into practice in your home campaign.”

Expert Instructors

The majority of workshops are led by two professors. Setting design is guided by an industry veteran and a renowned campaign designer, both teaching the craft of setting creation.

Career building features four different teachers, such as a puzzle design specialist, Clint McElroy, and an early professional game master. The expanded teaching staff is intended to offer targeted guidance to attendees with definite objectives.

“Some of them aim to start their own D&D actual play and share their stories with the world, several aim to release and write original content,” Carl explained. “Several only seek to ask, How do I get to be a DM at an event like an immersive experience? Which abilities that I need? Is this achievable?

Premium Packages

A fifteen hundred dollar premium package includes access to a opening gathering, a welcome gift pack, and a half-hour consultation appointment with a teacher. This represents the first Dungeon Master Academy, though the company has previously run comparable workshops during breaks between adventures at their premium gatherings.

“You could almost run an complete event just on consultation sessions for career game masters,” Carl said. “I don’t know if that’s the optimal application of all participants' schedule – I believe the formal instruction and the lab work is highly beneficial – but I think it’s going to be one of the most popular parts of the program.”

The twenty-five hundred dollar premium option offers an 60-minute private session and the possibility to run a game for several participants plus a teacher, who will then give comments and guidance.

“The purpose is for the instructor to evaluate whichever aspect is interested in: I struggle with improv or I encounter obstacles in specific fight encounters. May I present a scenario for you and get feedback on my areas of proficiency and challenge?” Carl explained. “Alternatively they want to receive input and guidance on a particular setting that they’ve been developing.”

Future Plans

Feedback from the first event will help guide upcoming academy workshops. Carl suggested that potential adjustments could include increasing consultation time, lengthening the event to three days, or trying out varied class arrangements.

“I hope that we host such events frequently,” Carl expressed. “I truly hope to see several DMU sessions in a calendar year, in different cities, and in multiple countries. The feedback has been overwhelmingly favorable. We're quite pleased with the results so far and I think it would be amazing to be able to organize these in conjunction with big conventions.”
