McLaren Attributes Crash to Rival Drivers for Team-Mate Crash

Tire detaches from racing car after collision between team drivers

A wheel detaches from the McLaren of Norris after he collided with fellow driver Piastri at the start of the US GP sprint event.

McLaren Formula 1 executives Zak Brown and Stella attributed competitors for the collision between Piastri and Lando Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.

The Australian driver, ahead of Norris in the championship by twenty-two points, made contact with his fellow McLaren driver after hitting Sauber's Hulkenberg.

The collision took both McLaren drivers out of the event, along with Aston Martin's Alonso, who was on the inner side of Hulkenberg.

Team Executives Voice Frustration Over Incident

Zak Brown, McLaren Racing's CEO, told Sky Sports that some of the racing at the front was "unprofessional", remarking: "Clearly Nico made contact with Oscar and he had no business being where he was."

McLaren F1 team principal Stella commented: "Our feeling is that we are displeased that we didn't have the chance to compete."

"It's surprising that some drivers with a lot of experience don't act with appropriate caution. Enter the initial turn, make sure you don't damage other drivers and continue."

The team indicated that Stella was referring to both the Sauber driver and Alonso.

Contrasting Views on the Incident

Nevertheless, 1996 world champion Damon Hill, providing analysis for a sports broadcast, said he thought Piastri had not shown enough understanding of the dangers of the opening turn of an F1 race when he decided to move inside to try to pass his teammate.

The Australian had a stronger launch than the Briton and initially challenged on the outer side on the ascending approach to the turn.

But he then moved inside in an attempt to get a run on his teammate on the exit, only to hit Hulkenberg.

Driver Reactions After the Incident

The McLaren driver said: "Less than perfect but I haven't seen what occurred, I tried to cut back on Lando and we were both quite distant from the corner apex and then got a hit and it propelled me into Norris. Unfortunate."

His teammate commented: "I just was struck, right? I did nothing wrong. Behind us events unfolded and I just was unfortunate and got hit because of it. I don't know. I need to review a bit more carefully. It's more drivers further back just being a bit careless and we are the result of that."

The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I believed I was in the correct position on the inner side, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outer side switching back and then I was there in the center."

The Sauber driver, who had qualified a best qualifying fourth, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from yesterday in the bin. Just chaotic."

"Oscar turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the inside line and exit of the first corner but I cannot vanish."

"I had Alonso attack on the inside and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to leave space for him and then Piastri turned in and the collision was unavoidable."

Post-Crash and Team Response

The team will analyze the incident with their drivers but not until the race weekend. Both cars needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on the weekend.

The team principal said: "Overall disappointed but we accept it, we are now focusing on repairing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the weekend from there."

"Our team holds a strong position from our competitiveness point of view so I hope we have the possibility to compete, race normally and capitalise on our performance."

"The points are the most important thing, I don't want to talk about mal-intent, just caution. A bit more prudence would be good for everyone."

Championship Implications

The sprint event was won by the Max Verstappen, who gained ground on both team racers in the standings - he is now fifty-five points behind Piastri and thirty-three adrift of Norris.

The team boss said: "The consequence is what the maths show - we lost eight points with both drivers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable car and two strong drivers. We look forward to just some normal racing."

Verstappen said he was taking the title race race by race.
