Scream Original Star the Actor Fears He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a massive family reunion. This latest installment marks the legendary comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a character you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a daunting task that kept me up at night," the actor admits.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallen Favorites
Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return remains a mystery. Audiences should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first occasion since a small cameo is a dream come true, though he is terrified about the public's reaction. The performer vividly recalls the precise instant he got the news from the series creator.
"I remember the phone call. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the years since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a part that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fans
Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense anxiety about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular series.
"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Abound
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back remains. Maybe they live rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way still living in a strange communal scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by earlier horror movies, also is on the table.
Audiences will find out the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
