The Mayor-Elect affirms he will make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his victory in November.
"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on carrying out the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, the community will always live within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
A Contentious Issue
During his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
However his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the apartment even though he hails from a well-known family.
A House Not Always Used
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience an environment far removed from his modest Astoria apartment.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city regulates on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than the average income.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
