The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
