The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage makes club a historic moment in a crucial European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in the warm-up matches.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch following his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with performances that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may represent multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a official full international.

Pitarch has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion soon."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While teenage Lamine chose Spain, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team pursue future success.

After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
