Three Lions Coach Reveals The Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.
A decade ago, Anthony Barry competed in League Two. Now, his attention is fixed on helping the England manager claim the World Cup trophy next summer. The road from the pitch to the sidelines started with a voluntary role for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He realized his calling.
Metoric Climb
The coach's journey has been remarkable. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a name with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His club career led him to elite sides, while also serving in international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the peak as he describes it.
“Dreams are the starting point … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a methodical process that allows us for optimal success.”
Focus on Minutiae
Obsession, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Working every hour day and night, they both push hard at comfort zones. The approach include psychological profiling, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and building a true team. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and avoids language like “international break”.
“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” Barry says. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”
Ambitious Trainers
He characterizes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We aim to control each element of play,” he states. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and we dedicate many of our days on. Our responsibility not just to keep up of the trends but to surpass them and innovate. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.
“We have 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We need to execute an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly during that time. We need to progress from thought to data to understanding to action.
“To develop a process that allows us to be productive during the limited time, it's crucial to employ all the time available from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections with them. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, observing them live, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”
Final Qualifiers
He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals by winning all six games and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This period to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.
“We are both certain that our playing approach should represent the best aspects from the top division,” he comments. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the robustness, the integrity. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.
“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They should overthink less and focus more on action.
“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, notably in domestic leagues. Coaches have extensive data currently. They understand tactics – structured defenses. Our aim is to increase tempo through midfield.”
Passion for Progress
Barry’s hunger for improvement knows no bounds. While training for the top coaching badge, he was worried regarding the final talk, as his cohort featured big names like Lampard and Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he sought out the most challenging environments he could find to hone his presentations. Including a prison in Liverpool, and he trained detainees in a football drill.
He earned his license with top honors, and his dissertation – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard included convinced and he brought Barry on to his staff at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the club got rid of most of his staff except Barry.
The next manager with the club was Tuchel, and, four months later, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he got Barry out away from London to work together again. The FA see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
